I am a freelance editor (I have a registered sole proprietorship called
Rutabaga Writer). Nearly all of my clients are academics whose native language is not English, but who want to publish in English. I have been hired to edit (a.k.a. to fix) texts that were translated and/or "edited" by AI. I am also a
writer. I am interested in developing a more robust philosophy of artificial intelligence, and to that end, I write a newsletter on Substack called
All-Natural Intelligence (tag line: No Artificial Ingredients). I am not rabidly opposed to AI, but I am interested in the stupidities surrounding perceptions of AI, and concerned about misuses of it. My position is that no person who is pursuing creative arts has any business employing AI in that pursuit. The creative artist may use AI tools in other aspects of life and business, but using them in the creation of art itself is a self-betrayal, and a self-deception. I am strongly in favor of EFA's initiative to develop a joint statement on AI with other editorial organizations.
