Amber Helt

Fiction Editor and Educator,
Rooted in Writing LLC

Bio

Hi! 👋 I’m Amber Helt—fiction editor, author coach, and writing instructor. I specialize in speculative fiction but enjoy working with all commercial fiction markets. I’ve worked with authors across all publishing paths: traditional houses, small presses, and self-publishing.

I believe every writer deserves an editor who’s both a true, enfranchised fan of the market and a personal support system beyond delivering a clean manuscript. That’s why all of my projects, regardless of service, include book launch consultations for publishing. When you succeed, we succeed.

I love helping authors shape ambitious ideas into precise, compelling prose—and that’s informed by over a decade of industry experience. I’ve edited for Big Five publishers, interned with literary agencies, and now lead a team of thoughtful, experienced editors who support authors in transforming strong drafts into market-ready books.

If you’re looking for someone who sees the big picture, understands your genre, and is invested in your long-term growth, I’d love to connect.

✨ FANTASY & SCI-FI FANGIRLING ✨

Speculative fiction (that is, fantasy, science fiction, and the weird worlds in-between) allows us to take abstract fears, desires, and virtues and transform them into external forces. I love how authors put these fantastical forces under a microscope to blow them up to epic proportions through world-building and larger-than-life heroes and villains. There is far more truth to be seen in the fantastical than the mundane, and I love serving authors who believe the same.

🌱 EDITORIAL PHILOSOPHY 🌱

At Rooted in Writing, we strive to be gardeners, not florists. A florist takes the flowers you’ve gathered and arranges them for you in a beautiful bouquet. It’s everything you wanted, but in a few weeks it dies and you have to go back for a new bouquet. As gardener-minded editors, we want to not just prune and arrange your words but give you the tools and nutrients needed to flourish in future seasons with new books. We’ll work with you to improve your writing craft and industry knowledge in addition to polishing and pruning your novel.

We help authors take a step back from their creative work to survey their publishing potential; we’re helping authors see the forest through the trees.
