Hello, Im Caitlin Smith. For six years, Ive been polishing prose, checking monster statistics, and asking authors things like, But what happens if the players decide not to kill the dragon? Its true to some extent across most forms of written content, but especially for those who write rules: Its not enough to have your writing make sense to most readers. Your rules needs to be impossible to misinterpret, because misinterpretation can lead to balance issues or arguments among players, and will certainly lead to frustration. Authors spend so much time working to get things right; its important to have an editor who can see how things can go wrong and can suggest what to do about them.My focus is line editing and copy editing. Im an expert in the specialist language of fifth-edition Dungeons and Dragons (2014 rules so far; Ive just begun work on the 2024 rules). I also enjoy other tabletop roleplaying games in my free time: investigating the mysteries of magic in D&D 3.5, hunting enemies of the Emperor in Dark Heresy, slinging spells and guns in Savage Worlds.Professionally, Ive edited four published books of third-party roleplaying supplements (lore, adventures, rules) for 5e D&D, and have two more books in the works (companies: Lost Dragons, Lost Adventures, Tomb Guardians, Critical Crafting). I edited parts of the monthly Patreon releases of Sordane Publishing (formerly Arcane Minis) from August 2022 until February 2025.Ive also done some short projects here and there, including editing the rules for a board/tactics game (Sordane Publishings Aldarra), and editing a novella. Caitlin Smith is one of the finest, if not the best overall, editors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Her talents extend far beyond simple linguistic, voice, tone, or grammatical review and she is more than capable of editing text with complex rules systems, formatting requirements, and constantly updating canonical language. In the 4+ years I have worked with Caitlin I have found no other editor so capable of compiling intricate systems of organization, reference, and review. If you are looking for an editor to manage texts from multiple writers, review complex game systems or watch out for logical fallacies or other issues with writing extending far beyond copy edits Caitlin is by far the best editor for the job. In fact, I have no doubt that she will wish to edit my testimonial, and that my testimonial as a 5+ year writer of 5th edition content would be all the better for her hand in it. -Dillon Olney, Writer / Creative Director
