To better determine the appropriate effort on your project, please note these editing definitions (with some possible overlap):
Developmental, Substantive, Structural, or Content Editing The author seeks assistance in developing and embellishing core ideas. The collaboration and interaction level is high. This may be a major effort, with sections being moved, discarded, rewritten, etc. Focus: ensure the content is well-organized, coherent, and effective.
Line Editing After resolution of major structural issues, line editing concentrates on smaller sections of the work, on paragraphs and sentences, word choice and nuance, to clarify the author's message and ease the reader’s understanding.
Copyediting The focus here is on the mechanics, to catch errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, subject and verb agreement, etc. The copy editor helps instill confidence that your work is authoritative and accurate. They ensure consistency according to a specific style guide, typically the Chicago Manual of Style.
Proofreading Providing the last quality check before your product is released to the world, the proofreader inspects the linguistic presentation and accepts or rejects what they find, with corrections. Technology may have changed since the printing press days, but the impact hasn’t! Proofreading is no less important than any of the previous steps.
