Academic writing can be as difficult and time-consuming as it is necessary for scholars in a publish-or-perish world. If that's your world, have you considered the difference a resourceful editor can make in your life?

I'm a seasoned professional with decades of experience in writing, revising, and publishing scholarly materials. My career has taken shape in a field of publishing where native speakers of English are a minority even though English is the dominant language. But I also work for authors who grew up using English as their primary language. Publishing early and often can be a challenge for anyone!

Your research publications are important—yes, because they advance the world's knowledge, but also because they promote your career. Let me help bring your research to international audiences. I'll help you cut through the difficulties of launching and sustaining your career.

From a perspective based on more than thirty years' experience as a language teacher and editor (of essays, articles, theses, dissertations, presentations, books and more), I understand authors' struggles. My work is intended as a professional support for early- and mid-career researchers, including graduate students, around the world. More established authors are also welcome.

*Over Thirty Years' Experience*

Together, editing and teaching have always characterized the work I do to strengthen others' communications.

・ My first paid gig in a language classroom began in 1992. A university student at the time, I additionally became known for proofreading other undergraduates' essays.

・ Ten years later, I was living in Japan and teaching English as a foreign language. I found that some of my best work flowed from researchers and professionals who needed my help to improve their English-language essays, résumés, websites, and so forth. The most absorbing projects were the articles brought to my EFL classroom by architects and art curators, doctors and dentists, botanists and climatologists.

・ After another ten years, I had completed a master's degree in education and my name was on a few publications. I had come to understand what it's like for authors to go through peer review. Most of my work was then at Japanese universities where other members of faculty—from Japan, South Korea, Senegal, Canada, and the United States—would seek out my help when they were working on English-language manuscripts. Their fields ranged from applied linguistics to food science.

・ Another ten years later, I'm still living in Japan but, shifting away from teaching roles in university classrooms, I've made editing my main occupation. Above all, I edit manuscripts in social science.

*A Full Range of Services*

・ Developmental editing: Early-stage attention to the structure of your document, the substance of your argument

・ Line editing: Middle-stage focus on stylistic issues and the mechanics of your text

・ Copy editing: Late-stage scan for errors and the overall appearance of your document

・ Proofreading: Final check for errors among your pages

*Write to Me Today!*

When you get in touch, I'll be interested to learn about your project and its requirements. Are you in the early, middle, or late stages of drafting the text? Will you need one, two, or three rounds of editing?

You can look forward to the continuity of working with me not only after you've submitted your work but also while you're making revisions (e.g., for peer review).

*What to Expect*

The first round will probably be the most intensive. While we might begin with a focus on your argument and its flow through the various parts of the text, I'll likely point out how you could restructure sentences for better style and clarity. Or, if you prefer to focus on copy editing, I'll start by addressing errors and inconsistencies in grammar and spelling. Your document will come back to you with extensive notes. I generally use Word's Track Changes function, and I place comments and queries where appropriate.

Between the first and second rounds, you can take your time and examine my queries and suggestions while you work toward your next draft. When you're ready, you may send the work back to me, and we'll renew our pursuit of the goal you had in mind when we began.

The second round is optional but recommended; it might be a final round of our work together. Or we might repeat the process and work through a third round.

Once we've arrived at your final draft, I'll aim to correct any remaining errors or inconsistencies in spelling or grammar. I'll also check up on formatting throughout the text and bibliography, and I'll run some final scans for consistency.

*Specific Requests Welcome*

Even if all you need is a shift in the formatting to match a journal's requirements (including, e.g., a shift from US-standard to UK-standard spellings), I can handle that for you. Just get in touch via the Contact page on my website! Or get in touch directly: I'm craig at currere-ses dot com ;-)
