Hi, I’m Brittany, an editor, award-winning author, and ideation partner for editors and authors.
I help manuscripts, editors, and authors find their way.
As a freelance editor with fifteen years’ experience in the publishing industry, I’ve edited the work of best-selling traditionally published authors, award-winning indie authors, and best-selling international authors. I provide expert editorial services, including copyediting, proofreading, and cold reading, for a wide range of publishers—from the Big Five to small regional presses.
I’m also the coauthor of the award-winning book Networking for Freelance Editors.
How I Support Publishers: Correctness | Consistency | Flexibility I might be a good fit for your freelance roster if you want an editor who • is attuned to inclusive editing practices and conscious language, • supports authors with a gentle, clear, and solution-oriented voice, • thinks a detailed, concise, and comprehensive style sheet is the cornerstone of a professional copyedit, and • delivers a high-quality edit on time and on budget.
How I Support Authors: Coaching: Guided Brainstorming/Story Support | Accountability | Industry Perspective The world can be a noisy place for writers. While we want all the ideas and all the solutions, our ability to process them often depends on intentionally creating space. Space for play, for exploration, for thinking deeply and making connections: space for creative alchemy. I offer support for writers who need a safe, cozy space to brainstorm, a place where intuition and creativity receive affirmation—and guidance. Editorial Services: Manuscript evaluations for nonfiction and fiction
How I Support Editors: Empathy | Brainstorming | Action | Accountability I offer support for editors who need a supportive, cozy space to brainstorm business solutions, a place where intuition and creativity receive affirmation—and guidance. As an ideation partner, I don’t believe in finding the “one true way” to be successful as an editor—I believe in helping you discover your way. Since 2017, I’ve been supporting editors via • my extensive volunteer work with the EFA (founding member of the Diversity Initiative in 2016, Welcome Program development and co-director); • providing support and mentoring for editors; • writing Networking for Freelance Editors (IBPA Benjamin Franklin Silver Medal Winner), developing Network Building (A Signature Course for Editors), cofounding the Networking Studio with the wonderful Linda Ruggeri; • 20+ presentations for editorial organizations, including EFACON 2023, University of San Diego’s editing certificate program; various EFA chapters, Editors Canada, Professional Editors Network (PEN), Publishing Professionals Network (PPN), National Capital Area Translators Association (NCATA), Women in Publishing Summit, Jennifer Lawler’s Club Ed, San Diego Professional Editors Network (SD/PEN), Atlanta Self-Publishing Conference 2024, Bay Area Editors’ Forum (BAEF); and • guest blog and podcast appearances.
Editorial Focus: My experience and preferences align with the following: • Genre fiction: fantasy, science fiction, mystery/cozies/thriller, romance, historical. • Nonfiction: memoir, history, self-help, creative nonfiction.
Editing Style: An inclusive editorial approach and conscious language review is built into every service I provide. I understand industry standards and best practices, and I edit to ensure consistency and maintain the author’s voice. In particular, clients appreciate my solution-oriented queries that make it easy for authors to implement revisions. I believe there’s tangible value in creating a positive editing experience for authors, and I enjoy being part of that process. In my experience, the best editing combines balance and deliberation, passion and purpose.
Special Interests: Inclusive editing, women’s literature and history, nature and the environment, history, neurodivergence, cats(!).
