đź’¬ Say Hello / Intro Thread

Let’s kick things off with some intros! Share a bit about the kind of editing you do—and, if you’d like, a little about you too. What brought you to this work? What do you do for fun? (Sleep is an acceptable answer.) Where are you based or spending most of your time these days?

You’re welcome to share a link to your website or social channels if you’d like others to explore your work or connect beyond this forum.

Hi, Rozi. An EFA staff member lurking here, though I moonlight as a freelance writer and sr. poetry editor for the Asian American literary magazine Slant'd (https://www.slantd.com/). I'm based in the Yorkville neighborhood in Manhattan and so excited you wonderful people have resurrected EFA's original chapter (it was NYC metro back in the '70s as well, since we've always had NJ, Westchester, and Hudson county members)!
Feel free to check out my website/work: https://vinaorden.com/. As an EFA staff member, I want to underscore that the opinions expressed on this website and in my community journalism, cultural criticism, creative nonfiction, poetry, and occasional painting are my own.

Hope to catch you and our other NYC metro members at a meetup or at Brooklyn Book Festival or the NYC Poetry Festival on Governors Island!

I'm native New Yorker, raised in Queens, employed in Manhattan, living in Brooklyn. I've been a pro dev editor of fiction in different media for close to 30 years: at two Big Five publishers, a fiction podcast studio, and as an independent contractor. I started freelancing part-time in 2009 and transitioned to full time last year. For fun I like discovering places in NYC I've never seen before. I'm also a born-and-raised New Yorker, currently living in Riverdale in the northwest Bronx. I'm new to the EFA (officially joined this winter!), but I've been freelancing for four years now after leaving my public health job in 2021. I'm a manuscript editor working primarily with indie authors in the narrative medicine space, though I'm hoping to eventually tackle more genres. I used to ghostwrite for founders and VCs in tech, so the medical and startup worlds are where my prospects keep coming from. I'm currently at work on a speculative novel, which is coming along a lot easier now that I'm no longer fully writing other people's books! Aside from being a book nerd, I spend a lot of my free time running—I ran my first NYC Marathon last year.

Hi, everyone.

I grew up in a suburb of Houston, Texas. I earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Houston, and my first job as a professional was for the Beaumont Enterprise in Texas. Having a young family, I realized that working nights as a reporter wasn't going to work out well, so I moved on to publishing. I was an in-house manuscript editor for a small publisher in Colorado of theater books for universities and for amateur actors, and then an in-house production editor for Simon & Schuster's Pocket Books imprint for 4 years. I went freelance full time in 1995 and have worked from a home office freelancing ever since. I am a consulting medical editor specializing in editing for multilingual physician-researchers who write research papers that they want to get published in medical journals. I earn board certification as an editor in the life sciences in 2008.

Hi everyone! I'm from Ohio originally, but I went to university at Hofstra on Long Island, specifically for Publishing! I've lived in Hoboken for 6 years now. I work full time at Taylor & Francis managing mental health journals. I've been freelancing part-time for a few years now. I do everything from copyediting, to coaching, to coordinating publication. I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hi folks,

I grew up in the suburbs (Westchester) but have lived in Manhattan and now Brooklyn almost my entire working life. I spent about 20 years in marketing at publishing and tech companies, and five years managing communications for a small social justice nonprofit. I write and edit across a wide range of topics and review books in multiple genres. I'm also a member of the sporadic Park Slope Parents Editors group and an EFA board member. Looking forward to our first in-person event Wednesday!

Hi all,

I'm a freelance native-English copy editor and translator, and work mainly with customers in Germany and Austria, including Thieme, a publisher of medical and scientific journals. My goal this year is to do more copyediting for fiction and non-fiction publishers. Also, I'm located in Kensington, Brooklyn.

My apologies, I wanted to come to tonight's meetup at 6:30pm in Manhattan, but I'm not able to make it. I look forward to meeting you in person in the future.

Best regards,
Matt

Hey there! Born in Queens, grew up in Long Island, and am currently in beautiful Greenpoint (Brooklyn) with my best friend Kokomo (my dog).

Line Editing contemporary, character-driven stories (fiction or creative nonfiction) is my passion, but I also offer copy editing in the academic field (curriculum, essays), and am open to working. Currently freelancing part time with the goal to bring it up to a full time gig and feel that sweet taste of freedom.

Best,
